Muddy and Andy Pandy in the Burton Papers....

A SCHOOL caretaker from Burton and his co-driver were ‘absolutely shattered’ after completing a 48-hour offroad trek in aid of charity.
Andrew Fleming, who works at Abbot Beyne School in Winshill, and Andy Guest, from Cannock, have raised more than £2,700 for Macmillan Cancer Support after completing the Mac 4x4 Challenge.
The pair, co-founders of the Staffs 4x4 Club, set off from Newcastleton in the Scottish borders and travelled through Northumberland, Cumbria and Lancashire, where the event finished in Clitheroe.
The 63 competing teams of two had to drive through the night, following a set itinerary, and find the answers to a series of clues, with the team gaining the most correct answers named winners.
Mr Fleming said: “We finished 19th, which we’re very pleased with as it was the first time we’ve ever done anything like this.
“There was lots of banter with other teams and lots of team work. Even though it’s a competition, everyone helps each other out and there’s a great atmosphere.
“Me and Andy got on fine — we’ve known each other for three-and-a-half years in off-road circles. There’s no point arguing because you’ve got to sit next to each other for three days.
“We had very varied terrain from Tarmac roads to dirt tracks through forests and some of the scenery was just breathtaking.
“We were absolutely shattered when we got to the hotel and just wanted to get to sleep — but we made sure we had a drink first.”
The pair’s departure from the start line followed a minute’s silence for Craig Ellis, from Ashbourne, who was due to take part in the event but died in November at the age of 38.
Off-road charity challenge exhausts school caretaker Donations to the pair’s fund-raising drive for Macmillan can be made online by visiting the team’s Just Giving page at http://www.justgiving.com/teamstaffs4x4
